I remember seeing the movie Ground Hog Day and thinking how hilarious it was to wake up every day and repeat the previous day over. We would not want that life but how many of us have Ground Hog Day at our business?

How many of us get up in the morning when the alarm rings, go to the office, go through emails, catch up on uncompleted work, start the day’s work, take phone calls, try to meet the day’s deadlines, go home, tell everyone what a busy day we had, go to bed, get up in the morning when the alarm rings……   Like Bill Murray in the movie, have you come to the realization that you are doomed to do the same thing every day?

Break the cycle!

As I have mentioned before, when this lack of purpose happens, you are working IN your business rather than ON your business. If people do not see the need for change, they won’t do it. And they usually don’t see the need because they are not looking.

How many times have you heard the phrase, “We’ve always done it that way”? You may have even said it yourself. The next time you hear it or catch yourself saying it turn things around. Ask, “Why are we doing it this way?” Will this help us achieve our goals? Is this the best way, the best solution? If you don’t get satisfactory answers it is time to make a change.

So, let’s get started. Step back and assess your business and create a strategy going forward.

What business are you really in and who are your customers? This may sound simple but companies as big as Kodak found that they were really in the imaging business not chemical photography. How will companies Amazon and Uber affect your strategy? What is your unique value proposition; what sets you apart from your competition? How do you get customers?

How does this business really work? What processes and procedures are in place to facilitate the smooth operation of the business when you are not present?

Are we easy to do business with? Is this business structured to meet the needs of our customers? Are all our processes aligned to customer needs? How does this business build loyal customers?

How do you spend you time? Are you working on planning and strategy and monitoring result? OR Are you spending time working on the minutia?


What exactly does that mean? Manage for RESULTS. Instead of concerning yourself with the way things are done ask instead what purpose the activity achieves. If it does not produce a desired business result scrap it.

When you see things from a strategic perspective you will be able to avoid letting the tactical things control you and create Ground Hog Day.
